Where Does Your Trust Lie?

“Trust in the Lord will all your heart and Do not depend on your own Understanding, Seek His will in all that you do and He will show you which path to take”

Proverbs 3:5-6

Do you trust Yahweh? Trust, by definition, is a “firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something”. We so often hear it thrown around, “I trust God,” but do we really … ? Do we truly trust that God is sovereign over the good and evil? Do we trust God and that walking by faith and not by sight is our reality? Do we trust God that He won’t fail us nor abandon us? (Deuteronomy 31:6;8)

I have struggled with trust because I often want to control the scenario and outcome. In a sense, wanting to be God and all-knowing. I have since repented. I have learned to daily surrender my plans to God. Render the pen and let Him show me the plan He has for me. That His will in my life is far better than anything I could come up with.

A few weeks ago, the Holy Spirit was showing me the scripture found in Isaiah 26:3-4. It reads, “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you. All whose thoughts are fixed on you! Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal Rock.” If we want to have peace, we must trust in the all-wise and all-knowing God. Jumping down further in Isaiah 26, verse 8, “Lord, we show our trust in you by obeying your laws. Our heart’s desire is to glorify your name.” When we are in rebellion, which is disobedience to God, we show that we do not truly trust Him. We think our way is better. Yet, God in His word says, “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9) So when things don’t look a certain way in the natural, that’s okay, God is in control and He knows what He is doing. This is the time to surrender the plans. Often, I find myself saying after prayers, “Lord, nevertheless, not my will but your will be done.”

It’s a sobering reminder to have on the forefront of our minds that we are finite beings and we don’t know everything. But we can rest in the fact that Yahweh does. At times, we often only see right in front of us, but God sees and knows what’s around the corner. He knows us better than we know ourselves. Rest in knowing that God is sovereign and worthy to have our full trust.

A funny analogy that I think relates to this is how many passengers want to be the driver. They say “turn here”, “park here”, “drive this speed”, or “slow down”, etc. How unwise it would be for the passenger to then reach over to the driver’s side, jerk the wheel and think they are in control rather than trusting in the one who is driving. We often do that with God. He is the driver and we are the passengers. Trust that God knows the speed, the direction, the timing and your safety.

And I don’t want to dismiss those who have doubts and struggle to trust God. That is real, and we see it in the bible. Eve, the generation of Israel, the father with the mute son, Thomas. However, we do not stay in this struggle. We seek God. We ask the Holy Spirit for help. We read the word to remind us of God’s character and nature. We, in faith, choose to trust God and He meets us there.

May the God who created us all help us settle in this truth, knowing that His ways are better and He is trustworthy. May He heal those from broken wounds that have led to trust issues. God is not like the ones who have hurt you in the past and He is a restorer. I don’t know the hurts and pains you have gone through and or are walking through in this season, but I know the God who created you and He can heal you if you surrender to Him. Gaze your eyes on the one who loves you and that is Jesus.

Call to Action: Consider where or what you have placed your trust in. Is it in God, yourself, money, or people? If it is anything outside of God, that’s an idol, which is something that is taking the place of God in your life. I urge you to seek the Father, repent of the sin and allow Him to heal and restore you. He can do far more with your surrender than you could ever do. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9) We are the ones who need to take action and the step towards repenting. The Holy Spirit convicts us, but we, too, have a part to play. Repent, Seek God and Trust Him.

I love you and Jesus does too!!
